Top 51 Films of The Decade (30-21)

with 5 comments

All week here at A Shot of Incilin we’ve been looking my top films of the decade. So far I’ve gotten good responses and I’m inspired to keep making massive movie lists (Props to Angel, Dan, and David, but fuck the Facebook see me in the comments!). Stay tuned all week as we make our way to the best film of the decade, which we’ll reveal on Friday. Anyhow, without further ado, I present numbers 30 through 20.

Rules: 1) Only films, no documentaries (Another list on that soon). 2) If I haven’t seen it, it doesn’t list. I’m sure you all have suggests, put them in the comments and I’ll get back to you. 3) I know I must have forgot at least 5 titles, again see me in the comments. 4) This is a loose list, meaning every film on this list can be placed 5 to 10 spots higher or lower than the spot I gave it.

Complete Films aka The Best… – Films that not only work on every level but are an ideal example of their specific genres.

30) Hotel Rwanda – The Best film with a political/social message. It’s impossible to watch this film and not start taking an interest in the horrible genocide in Darfur. Interestingly enough, it’s the most rented but never watched film on Netflix.

29) Tropic Thunder – The Best film to satirize Hollywood. It’s funny because most of the jokes are true. Not to mention the All STAR cast. Everyone talks about how funny Robert Downey is, and they should, but they forget how good Jack Black and Ben Stiller are too.

Didn’t these guys become ghosts before the car exploded? Meaning, they didn’t die?

28) The Matrix Reloaded – The Best Sci Fi/Action Film. I don’t even like action/sci fi films but even I had to give it up for this film. The extended highway chase scene is one of the best highway scenes I’ve ever seen.

27) Happy-Go-Lucky – The Best Film about ordinary people. Sally Hawkins is absolutely adorable in the leading role in a simple film about the every day life of a happy go lucky girl. [1]

26) Finding Nemo – Best Children’s Film. This faces super stiff competition from Wall-E and Ratatoulie, but it beats those two because it’s great cast of characters who all have distinct, memorable personalities.

25) Ocean’s 11 - The Best use of star power in a film. This film just bully’s us into liking it with one star after another. If I had to describe this film in one word it would be: Suave.

Notice the, ummm…use of colors.

24) Sin City – Best extended use of CGI in a film. Also, qualifies for “Most Gore In A Film” (Along with Old Boy and Kill Bill). I’m not a fan of comic books, or fantasy in general, but this film has exceptional use of colors, imagery, and imagination.

23) O Brother Where Art Thou - Best dialogue in a film. “I’m gonna propose you a proposition!” “You boys are dumber than a bag of hammers.” “Pete and Delmar just been baptized and saved. I guess I’m the only one that remains unaffiliated. ” I could quote this film for 20 minutes.

22) Pirate of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl - Best summer popcorn film. The plot may be a bit convoluted, but this film is all around fun. Plus, it features one of the most original characters (Also very quotable) I’ve ever seen in a film, played flawlessly by Johnny Depth. Too bad the rest of the trilogy is fuckin awful.

Don’t deny it, this is exactly how you used to dance.

21) Super Bad – Best Comedy. It’s funny because it’s the only film that’s honest about the awkwardness of the high school experience. Most of my friends look at current high school kids and say, “Look at these immature idiots. What’s wrong with kids these days? I was never like that when I was in high school.” Get the fuck outta here! You wasn’t born grown! You, me, and everyone we know was a clown in our younger days, we just don’t like to admit it. But Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan can admit it, and they exploit it to create the funniest film of the decade.

[1] Did I mention that Sally Hawkins was absolutely robbed at the Oscars? I understand her not winning (“It’s a honor just to be nominated,” as they say) but how can you win the Golden Globe but not even get an Oscar nod? Are you honestly going to tell me she didn’t top Angelina’s performance in the mildly received Changling? It boggles the mind.

  1. Idk if you could do this list until the decade actually been over and have you seen The Hangover. I think it beats out Superbad (which I loved) for best comedy.

  2. @Daniel, How can Reloaded be worse than Revolutions? No way dude. And it's there because those action sequences are fuckin bananas (Particularly the highway scene). Then again, action movies really up my alley like that anyhow.

@Steve, I feel like I loved Tropic Thunder not just because it was funny, but because it made fun of the Hollywood system (while being apart of that very system). It's the best film to do that since Robert Altman's The Player. I take it most people don't hate on the Hollywood system as much as I do, so they don't appreciate the film like I might.

  5. Jeezus, sir. We have much to disgust. I'm loving this list so far, with a few major exceptions (the worst of the three lame Matrix films? Really?), but I'm just glad you're doing it. It's giving me something exciting to agree with and bitch about. And I dig your comments on them. Now let us commence quoting O Brother Where Art Thou? for the next twenty minutes.
